You Might Need to Raise the Stakes This Year

When I was 10 years old my parents were getting a divorce. My dad and I were living in an apartment which meant my stepmom and her five children, my brothers and sisters and I were separated.

Hopefully only for a bit.

There was a candy sale going on at my school, the prize was a $50 gift certificate to Don’s Seafood in Metairie, La.

So I was going to win that prize to get my dad and mom back together again.

After school I was being dropped off at the house I used to call home before my dad would retrieve me and take me to the apartment. It was the worst time of day each day.

Before that I had about 3 hours where I would go door to door selling candy.

I never took a day off.

The problem was that I was still losing and each day they would announce that over the loudspeaker and with only one weekend left I had to do something BIG.

So I asked for TWELVE cases of candy. My dad had to sign off on getting it, while he didn’t know WHY I needed the candy he saw how hard I was working. He did ask me my plan and I told him the truth, I didn’t know how I was going to sell it but I knew I would.

On that day he picked me up from school with the 12 boxes and I immediately went to work.

I worked late into the evening and most of the day the next day but I barely made a dent in the boxes.

That year in New Orleans, La (where I am originally from) police were on strike and so they had the biggest parade each year 2 blocks from my door.

I sold the rest of the boxes in minutes. While I wasn’t aware of the parade passing near my house there is no rule against getting lucky but if I didn’t have the 12 cases I would have lost.

The problem with the way most of us attack weight loss is that the stakes aren’t high enough.

For almost everyone the thought of starving for the rest of your life is unappealing and I get that.

This is the biggest issue with the diet industry in my view. Most companies do a good job preying on you in a vulnerable moment but then set up systems that almost force you to fail or worse, they don’t bring food back or teach you how to do it.
